Both Norfolk Academy and Cape Henry Collegiate School have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools within the past two years. COUNSELING
Navy College counselors provide academi6c and vocational counseling services which include: looking at the SMART to review college credit recommended from military experience; considering an education plan; referral and enrollment into SOCNAV, NCPDLP and other school programs; use of the DANTES testing program; information on school funding such as Tuition Assistance, Veterans' Benefits, descriptive materials on college and vocational correspondence courses; referral to the Navy College Learning Center; distance learning options and career placement testing as needed.
GROUP COUNSELING—COLLEGE
ORIENTATION WORKSHOP
Offered every Tuesday at 11 a.m., this workshop focuses on tuition assistance and other Navy College voluntary education programs. The workshop is required for new tuition assistance users; recommended for those who need a review of the tuition assistance program; and is strongly recommended for new students who are interested in individual counseling with one of our counselors. The class lasts approximately 1.5 hours.
NAVY COLLEGE LEARNING CENTER
Tuition-free, computer-based courses are offered in language arts, mathematics, reading and science. The courseware covers skills through high school and preparation for college. In addition, there are courses that can enhance work skills, such as applied math, data skills, reading for information and writing in the workplace. Ideal candidates are those preparing to take the ASVAB, GED, SAT, ACT, multiple CLEP or DSST exams, college placement tests or just needing basic review. The center is open to all active duty, reserve, retired personnel, their adult family members and Delayed Entry Personnel. SMART (SAILOR/MARINE AMERICAN
COUNCIL ON EDUCATION REGISTRY TRANSCRIPT)
The SMART is an electronic transcript available for each Sailor and Marine, approved by American Council on Education (ACE), to validate military occupational experience and training. SMART lists occupations held, Navy schools completed with ACE recommended credit, Marine Correspondence courses, college-level exams completed and other learning experiences. Sailors may request an unofficial SMART by logging on the Navy College website at https://www.navy college.navy.mil or by visiting the Navy College Office. An official SMART is required for college enrollment and may be ordered through the Navy College Office or by using the SMART Official Transcript request form.
UNITED SERVICES MILITARY
APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
USMAP is a formal military training program which provides active duty Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy service members the opportunity to improve their job skills and complete their civilian apprenticeship requirements while they are on active duty. This program allows active duty personnel to receive recognition for skills learned through one's rate. The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) provides the nationally recognized "Certificate of Completion" upon program completion. AFLOAT COLLEGE EDUCATION (NCPACE)
The Navy sponsors tuition-free college courses for seagoing UICs. There are two platforms—Instructor and technology-based learning. Sea-going squadrons on the base may request technology-based programs for their personnel to be offered in their workspaces. Interested commands should contact the Navy College Office at 433-3129. EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY CENTER
A Consortium representative provides financial counseling and information in support of local state consortium schools including Tidewater Community College, Thomas Nelson Community College, Old Dominion University, Regent University and Norfolk State University. A Consortium rep is available at NAS Oceana Wednesday afternoon in Building 531, Suite 100. The rep visits Dam Neck on selected Fridays. The remainder of the week, the representative visits other local naval installations. Appointments with the rep can be scheduled through the Navy College Office.
NAVY COLLEGE CENTER
The Navy College Center is a service located at Naval Education and Training Professional Development and Technology Center in Pensacola, Fla. The center is staffed 14 hours a day, seven days a week to answer questions about the Navy College Program and to help sailors and Marines with the SMART and to document degrees earned on active duty. DISTANCE LEARNING PARTNERSHIPS
In an effort to make rate-related degrees even more accessible to Sailors, the Navy has developed partnerships with colleges and universities from all over the country, providing Associate and Bachelor degrees while maximizing credit from military ratings and service schools. This program also provides distance-learning courses in a variety of formats including videotape, paper, Internet and CD-ROM. Several of the partnership schools visit Navy College throughout the month including Coastline Community College, Excelsior College, Thomas Edison State College, University of Maryland and Vincennes University. Appointments for these reps are available at Navy College Oceana by calling 433-3129 and at Dam Neck Annex by calling 492-6183. DEFENSE ACTIVITY FOR NON-TRADITIONAL
EDUCATION SUPPORT (DANTES)
The mission of DANTES supports the voluntary education functions of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, including all military services and Reserve components. DANTES provides nontraditional education programs to include Examination programs, Independent Study, External Degree Programs, Nationally Accredited Distance Learning Programs, Service-members' Opportunity Colleges and military evaluations. DANTES provides the Navy College with reference publications, manuals and handbooks, audiovisual training aids, posters and brochures.
EXAMINATION PROGRAM
Many testing services are available to military personnel through Navy College: General Education Development (GED) Exam; Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT); American College Test (ACT); college credit by exams including eCLEP General and Subject Exams, electronic DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (ibtDSST) and Excelsior College Exams (ECE). There are over 70 eCLEP and ibtDSST computer-based exams for college credit which provide immediate feedback to the test taker. SERVICE MEMBER'S OPPORTUNITY COLLEGE (SOC)
SOC is a network of hundreds of colleges and universities whose policies and programs are designed to help meet the higher education needs of service members. SOC has developed a degree program known as SOCNAV, which includes a network of associate and bachelor degrees designed to meet the special needs of naval personnel and SOCMAR to meet the needs of Marines. On-base college programs are members of SOC.
ECPI - COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY
Offers undergraduate courses towards several Associate and Bachelor degrees while offering courses leading to several different computer certifications. Offers courses toward Airframes and Powerplant licensure; Associate degrees in Professional Aeronautics and Aviation Maintenance Management, Bachelor degree programs in Technical Operations, Aviation Business Administration and Professional Aeronautics, and a Master's degree in Aeronautical Science with specializations in aviation management, operations, aeronautics and safety. FLORIDA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

ON-BASE SCHEDULES
Programs and courses on the base are offered in accelerated terms, varying in length from eight week to 16-week semesters. Some of the schools offer special weekend programs and many also offer online and distance learning courses. All of the undergraduate institutions offer eight to nine week terms, five times per year. Accelerated graduate programs are offered in nine to 10 week cycles. The Navy College Learning Center offers a condense eight day session which runs eight hours a day.

The Resource Room has computers with Internet connection for student use for NKO courses, distance learning, SMART look up, studying and student references.
