Aberdeen Proving Ground
Some of the information for this section came from the Aberdeen Proving Ground website, http://www.apg.army.mil. The Privacy and Security Notice for this site states "information presented on the Aberdeen Proving Ground website is considered public information and may be distributed or copied."
Aberdeen is the Army's oldest active proving ground—established Oct. 20, 1917, on the shores of Chesapeake Bay in Maryland's Harford County six months after the U.S. entered World War I—out of a need for a larger munitions and equipment-testing facility in a remote area yet close to industrial and shipping centers. Officials fired the first weapon three months later and the war ended Nov. 11, 1918. Since then the facility has proof-tested field artillery weapons, ammunition, trench mortars, air defense guns and railway artillery.
At the same time, the nearby Edgewood Arsenal started developing, producing and testing chemical warfare materiel. The two installations combined as Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1971.
At the peak of World War II, the post hosted 2,348 officers and 24,189 enlisted personnel, and expanded to include an ordnance training school and the developmental testing of small arms.
Today, the Home of Army Ordnance covers more than 72,500 acres and is one of the finest test, evaluation, research, development, engineering and training installations in the world, with 11,700 civilians, more than 5,100 military personnel and nearly 3,000 contractors and private business employees. The post is also Harford County's largest employer and one of the largest employers in Maryland, supporting 1,470 military family members, another 243 off post and more than 16,000 military retirees and retiree family members. Plus, APG's economic impact—payroll and con-tracts—frequently nears $1.1 billion.
As a result of the U.S. Department of Defense's Base Closure and Realignment, the post anticipates an additional 10,000 personnel and 40,000 new jobs. And the post is already home to nine major commands and supports 70 tenants, 20 satellites and 17 private activities. Plus, more than 20,000 individuals each year, both domestic and foreign, train in mechanical maintenance, health promotion and preventive medicine, chemical and biological defense, and chemical casualty care, chemical demilitarization.
The 72,500-acre installation—more than half of which is water or wetlands—also provides laboratories for research investigations, state-of-the-art ranges, engineering test courses for wheeled and tracked vehicles and a wide variety of research.
The post's 2,000 buildings—offices, administrative and training facilities and warehouses, barracks and family housing—cover nearly 15 million square feet. Other features/facilities include:
6,800 acres of improved grounds.
Nearly 300 miles of roads.
More than 567,000 square yards of airfield pavement.
40 miles of track.
Nearly 200 firing positions.
Eight medical research laboratories.
Ten chemical laboratories.
A pair of physics laboratories.
Five human engineering laboratories.
