The 27th Special Operations Wing is the host unit at Cannon Air Force Base. Activated Oct. 1, 2007, the 27 SOW is the newest active-duty wing of Air Force Special Operations Command headquartered at Hurlburt Field, Fla.
The wing's primary mission is to plan and execute specialized and contingency operations using advanced aircraft, tactics and air refueling techniques to infiltrate, exfiltrate and resupply special operations forces and provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and close air support for SOF operations. The following groups, squadrons and tenant units ensure the success of these goals.
27TH SPECIAL
OPERATIONS GROUP
The 27th Special Operations Group is one of four assigned to the 27 SOW. The group accomplishes global special operations as an Air Force component of the United States Special Operations Command. Those ops include infiltration/exfiltration, combat support, helicopter and tilt-rotor aerial refueling, psychological warfare and other special missions. Comprised of eight squadrons, three tenant units and one detachment, the group also directs the deployment, employment, training, and planning for squadrons that operate the MC-130W, AC-130H, PC-12, Dornier Do-328, M-28, CV-22 and other aircraft, as well as operational support to flying operations.
Organizations within the 27 SOG:
• 27th Special Operations Support Squadron
• 3rd Special Operations Squadron
• 16th Special Operations Squadron, AC-130 H Spectre Gunship
• 33rd Special Operations Squadron
• 20th Special Operations Squadron, CV-22 Osprey
• 73rd Special Operations Squadron, MC-130W Dragon Spear

522ND SPECIAL OPERATIONS SQUADRON
The 522nd Special Operations Squadron, known as the Fireballs, were welcomed back to the U.S. Air Force at Cannon in a reactivation ceremony on April 7, 2011. The unit is Air Force's first MC-130J Combat Shadow II Squadron. Their new mission will be infiltration, air refueling, and the resupply of joint and coalition Special Operations Forces via airdrop in hostile, denied, and politically sensitive areas.
20TH SPECIAL OPERATIONS SQUADRON
The 20th Special Operations Squadron reactivated Jan. 15, 2010, at Cannon AFB, with a primary mission to conduct day or night low-level penetration with CV-22 Osprey aircraft into hostile enemy territory, to accomplish infiltration and exfiltration, aerial gunnery support and resupply of special operations forces throughout the world.
Formed as the 20th Helicopter Squadron in 1956 to perform traditional helicopter missions with H-21s for the Tactical Air Command, the Green Hornets specialized in unconventional warfare and drug enforcement missions. Throughout the years, the 20 SOS has flown direct assaults on numerous high profile targets and affected the rescue and exfiltration of hundreds of U.S. and allied soldiers. Included among these heroic actions are the daring daylight medevac of 32 injured soldiers in the midst of a battle, and the rescue of a downed aircrew deep in hostile territory, which earned the squadron its second MacKay Trophy.
27TH SPECIAL OPERATIONS SUPPORT SQUADRON
The 27th Special Operations Support Squadron was activated Nov. 1, 1991, and provides support and expeditionary combat Airmen so the 27 SOW can train, deploy and fight combat operations. The squadron's one and only objective is "World Class Support." To that end all personnel work as an integrated unit to maintain the squadron's around-the-clock mission capability, meet all customers' needs and continually strengthen relationships.
The 27 SOSS supports eight squadrons, three tenant units and one detachment, with responsibilities that include Air Traffic Control Operations, Aircraft and Flight Scheduling, Aircrew Training, Airfield Management, Airspace Management, Electronic Combat, Flight Intelligence, Melrose Air Force Range Control, Simulator Operations, Weather Forecasting, Wing Weapons, HAVE ACE/Joint office and Medical Support.
Each member of this diverse unit receives professional military training and education, as well as specialized upgrade training in each career specialty. Personnel also continually deploy as expeditionary combat Airmen to contingencies throughout the world, including Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
318TH SPECIAL OPERATIONS SQUADRON
The 318th Special Operations Squadron is one of four flying squadrons within the 27 SOG. The squadron flies the Pilatus PC-12 and the M-28 Skytruck light and medium intratheather transport aircraft to accomplish global special operations as a component member of Special Operations Command. Crews plan, prepare and execute nonstandard aviation missions in support of joint special operations forces, while directly supporting theater special operations commanders, by conducting night vision infiltration, exfiltration, resupply and other combat tasks on unimproved runways.
73RD SPECIAL OPERATIONS SQUADRON
The 73rd Special Operations Squadron, activated in 2006, operates the MC-130W Dragon Spear aircraft in support of special operations missions. The squadron was the first flying squadron to move to Cannon Air Force Base after the 27 SOW joined Air Force Special Operations Command in 2007.
3RD SPECIAL OPERATIONS SQUADRON
The 3rd Special Operations Squadron accomplishes global special operations tasking as a member of the Air Force component of United States Special Operations Command. It directly supports theater commanders by providing precision weapons employment and persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. The 3rd SOS is co-located at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., and Nellis AFB, Nev.
16TH SPECIAL OPERATIONS SQUADRON
The 16th Special Operations Squadron flies
the AC-130H Spectre gunship, a heavily armed aircraft designed for close air support, armed reconnaissance, interdiction, night search and rescue, and airborne command and control. The 16 SOS trains and maintains its combat-ready force to provide highly accurate firepower in support of both conventional and unconventional forces. The AC-130H, a modified Lockheed C-130E model aircraft, is configured with side-firing weapons, including one 40 mm Bofors cannon and one Army 105 mm howitzer.
33RD SPECIAL OPERATIONS SQUADRON
The 33rd Special Operations Squadron became an active component of the 27 SOW on July 31, 2009, in response to overseas contingency operations. Since 1917, the squadron has received outstanding unit awards for air combat support provided in World War II, Southwest Asia, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
